As a new love comes to an end an old love returns. It seems to be that Paramount Pictures is taking a cue from Disney and re-releasing Titanic in 3-D out on April 6. Rose (Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road) a first class passenger falls in love with Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) a working class boy and despite society’s social structure manage to spend time with one another up until the sinking. There has been a mix reaction about the re-release but Castro applauds Titanic by saying, “I’m happy for the movie. Good job!”
Enough with all the love 2012 is also the year of super heroes! The Avengers in theatres May 4 brings familiar faces together. The super heroes of the Marvel Comics come together for the first time with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk and more.
They are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced. (synopsis from www.movieinsiders.com) Castro states, “There’s a lot of super heroes I want to see how they work together.” Staring Robert Downey, Scarlet Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth.
The anticipation for The Dark Knight Rises is insane with the July 19 midnight screenings being sold out at IMAX’S in New York and we’re not even into the second month of the New Year. But it’s fans like Ortiz who keep the franchise going by saying, “I like Batman he’s my favorite super hero and I like his movies.” With the return of Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, Batman faces challenges from the brutal Bane and the stealthy Catwoman. (synopsis from www.movieinsider.com)
One can’t deny that 2012 is filled with new beginnings with The Hunger Games and series winding up like The Twilight Saga. However we can all enjoy the classics that are popping up from Titanic to The Avengers and enjoy the impact that this year’s films will have.
Anticipated Movies!
Article by Marielena Apodaca / February 2012
2012 is a year of new beginnings and endings with The Twilight Saga coming to a close and all of the Marvel Comics characters coming together for the first time on screen. If the world is going to end this year let it end with a bang!
One of the most anticipated releases for the year is The Hunger Games based on the book by Suzanne Collins in theatres March 23. Staring Jenifer Lawrence (X Men: First Class), Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are Alright), and Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song).
Katniss Everdeen,(Jenifer Lawrence) a 16-year old from a poor territory that was once Appalachia, becomes a gladiator in a reality-show that is a battle to the death against other teens from the 12 districts of the former United States. (synopsis from www.movieinsider.com)
Not only does the film adaption appeal to those who read the books but Carol Ortiz, junior, says “The trailer looks good.” filled with action and suspense The Hunger Games will be a must see.
However a trend has been happening with past and present book series being turned into popular films e.g. Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga, loyal fans of the series seem to try to dominate one another.
As Harry Potter wrapped up last year it seems that The Hunger Games has taken its place. When asked about which series will dominate this year Diana Castro, senior, states “I think Twilight is going to win even though I don’t want them to.”
On that note The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part 2 is out this year on November 16. With the return of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner in their respective roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black. The vampires and werewolves must come together and fight against the Volturi to save Bella and Edward’s half- vampire-half-human daughter Renesmee.
Dress Code
by Miryan Arias
Dress code has become a big issue in KHS. Most girls do not follow the rules but it seems to be the boys who get in trouble the most. What does this say about our school? Security has gave up on the student body. They don't seem to care anymore. I remember freshman year 2009-2010 security would be on every girls case for even daring to wear shorts or a shirt. Now girls take advantage of the lack of restriction and wear provocative clothing.
Girls parade around in what sometimes seems like underwear and don't seem to be told anything. This needs to stop, it's extremely degrading towards themselves. They wear transparent shirts with a strip of cloth under. Why is this permitted? Boys always get there hats taken away if seen. Hats aren't even such a big deal. But girls are never told anything about their wardrobe. Not a single peep. So instead of telling the student body to get their act together it should be the school who should clean up their act.

The Hunger Games
Article by Logan Jenks
The Hunger Games is a highly regarded book with readers from all ages, and is a New York Time’s bestseller. As of 2010 there have been more than 2.9 million copies in print.
The book takes place in North America after its destruction. The nation has one wealthy capitol, which has 12 districts around it. Annually there is a televised event called “The Hunger Games” where a person is picked at random to participate. “The Hunger Games” is an event where from every two districts a male and female are chosen to fight in arena to death till one remains. In the book we follow Katniss, a 16 year old girl who volunteered to be in this barbaric tradition.
With how much popularity this book has claimed it was only bound to be made into a movie. The director, Gary Ross, has brought movies such as “Seabiscut” and “Pleasantville”. Unlike those movies though “Hunger Games” will not be starring Tobey Maguire but instead Jennifer Lawrence. It is set to be released 23 March 2012.
African-American Celebration
Article by Rudy Morales
February is the month in which we remember and honor our African American forefathers and those who have fought for our rights, as a minority who were being treated as second class citizens they stood up against how our government was being run. Among these very honorable people was Martin Luther King Jr. Although he passed away on April 4th he will always be remain in our hearts and will continue to remind us that we must work together as a whole and treat each other equally and fair.
I believe that as a very music tuned generation we must also remember the great musicians who have broken down racial barriers. The first black artist to have their music video shown on MTV was Michael Jackson; this event was a great success and opened the door to many other artists who would be featured on the network.
Important Dates in African American History:
- The 13th Amendment To abolish Slavery was adopted December 6th, 1865
- The Fifteenth Amendment was ratified on February 3, 1870 it allowed citizens to vote regardless of race or color
- Martin Luther King Jr. was a very inspirational African American. He fought for the rights of minorities in the United States and was born January 15th 1929
- Civil rights were not one by one person but as a nation as a whole people worked together to accomplish a common goal
Rich in Culture
Article by Diana Lopez
February. It’s the month when one can take a look at the rich culture behind African Americans. For KHS students, it has never been easier than now to establish a realization of the deep cultural ties America has with African Americans through the mediums of one special club.
“Being in this club has made me enthusiastic,” Kevin Martinez says with a pensive look on his face. “Since I’m going to college, I plan on meeting new people there.”
Kevin is a senior at KHS who has been a part of the Multi-Cultural Club for about a year and who has experienced the knowledge the club has to offer. Although the club is small, the schedule has been tightly planned by month and by culture.
For February, Ms. Dorado (the club advisor), planned for movies, powerpoints, and discussions.
The months that have yet to been gone through with are January-Chinese New Year, February-Black History Month, March-Carnival (Brazil), and April-Lebanon/Middle Eastern Cultures.
Ms. Dorado and the rest of the club are open to new members who are willing to expand their perspective on the world around them.
“It’s fun, we’re open to whoever.” Ms. Dorado says with a smile.
Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
In Jeremy Rifkin’s article “A Change of Heart About Animals”, Rifkin informs that “animals are more like us than we had ever imagined”. I strongly agree with Jeremy; animals have feelings just like humans do and I believe they should be treated fairly and should be cared for. Animals have some human abilities and think like us as well.
For example Koko, the 300-pound gorilla, was taught sign language and mastered more than 1,000 signs and understands several thousand English words. Animals should be protected and cared for. Like us, they feel pain, happiness, anger, confusion, nervousness, and need attention. Everyone wants to be treated fairly and to be cared for, why not animals? They deserve love and care too.
There are people out there that hate animals and some that admire them. I am one of those people who love animals. There are cruel people who abuse animals and make them suffer. Some animals are left severely injured. I believe that those who abuse animals should be sent to prison.
There are animals that are killed for our benefit. Cows, chickens, and other farm animals are turned into food. We need to eat and I believe that’s just how life works. I believe animals should be only used for good purposes only, and not abused or used unnecessarily.
Sincerely,
Jose Quintanilla

How to Wear White After Labor Day
By:Marielena Apodaca
As the fashion foe paw states never wear white after Labor Day. To be honest white is a practical color and serves as a canvas for a somewhat simple and casual outfit or to a high end couture look.
According to Fashionista.com white jackets are the new black jackets that add a softer look to any work or night outfit. As well as a simple white tee can shine on it’s on with bold colored necklaces. A bolder look would be wearing different shades of white from head to toe like design label Chanel.
Another fun way to wear white would be white jeans with a different colored panel on the side like these jeans designed by 3.1 Phillip Lim. If you’re into a retro classic look why not try a halter type white mini dress with black boots to give yourself a 60’s vibe. Even if you’re not that into fashion or are a big risk taker with your outfits white can be worn after Labor Day as long as you’re having fun with it.

Pink Slip for a Class Switch!
By: Diana Lopez
It is the start of a new year at our own Knight High, and as usual everyone was unhappy with their classes, also as usual, everyone waited last minute. So it seems that counselor’s are a little fed up with the actions of students and decided to change things up.
Instead of having the five hour long wait at lines to talk to counselor, pink slips were handed out to students who wished to have a schedule change. On one hand, it allows counselors to make hundreds of changes a couple of days in a much more organized manner. On the other hand, there can be misunderstandings between the alumni and the administrators.
“I hate not being able to see every student who wants to talk to a counselor,” says Mr. Hart head counselor, “but with over 3,400 students and only 6 counselors available, we got to a point were we couldn’t do it all face to face.”
Ultimately, the counselors are there to help students, so what they really want is input. They want to know how the students reacted to the idea, so if you have a complaint or comment, bring it up with your designated counselor, or even better, Mr. Hart, who is the head counselor.
Also if possible, all students should fix their schedules the appropriate time, when you go pick up your books! Don’t procrastinate, and you wouldn’t be in the mess in the first place!

Say Good-Bye to British Literature!
By: Diana Lopez
With college becoming more and more competitive, it is important that student at least know the basics of writing an essay. Unfortunately, UC statistics show that freshman cannot perform these requisites. The solution? The UC’s created a course called, Expository Reading and Writing. This course is meant to really teach a student how to write a decent essay. Unfortunately, this new course has created consequences.
Not only are there a dramatically small amount of students in the course British Literature, but Knight High is going to completely phase it out next year. That’s right, the alumni’s only options will be Expository Reading and Writing, English Literature and Composition AP, or Bible Literature.
Although this change narrows down future seniors decisions, they shouldn’t dread the idea of having the nefarious Mr. Wakely as a teacher, there will be more teachers available for the course such as Mrs. Prewitt.

Happy 50th Birthday Palmdale!
By:Marielena Apodaca
Birthdays are celebrated to the youngest child to the eldest in the family. But everyone and everything around us is getting older including our beloved city, Palmdale.
Aug. 25, was a day of celebrating in the Poncitlán Square located by Palmdale’s city hall. Palmdale became a city on Aug. 25, 1962 and past Friday marked its 50th anniversary. Many of Palmdale’s residents had the chance to be a part of our city’s history by enjoying jazz music that was performed. As well as a short historical video of Palmdale as a pioneer town to the grand city it is today. Not only did the adults have a blast listening to music and enjoyed the spectacular car show, but children of all ages had fun by decorating their own party hats out of paper bags, making over the top sunglasses, and creating ribbon wands. It wouldn’t be a party without pictures!
Residents had the opportunity to take a family or solo picture with the Happy Birthday Palmdale sign free of charge with a decorated birthday backdrop. To top it all off Palmdale’s first mayor, Larry Chimbole, and the 50 grand men of Palmdale, the men who put in their own money to start up our city, where present and Mr. Chimbole gave a speech reminiscing Palmdale’s early beginning. Following the tradition of every birthday Palmdale had wonderful cupcakes given out to each guest to cap off a great night.
